Fox Bowman Duarte attorneys Diego Vargas and Jonathan Rands were asked to speak at the 2008 Washington Foundation for Criminal Justice annual seminar “Defending DUIs.” The seminar, held annually for over 15 years, has always included a presentation from an attorney now with Fox Bowman Duarte. This year over 300 Washington state DUI Attorneys attended the seminar and heard Jonathan Rands speak about the Canadian immigration consequences of a DUI, and Mr. Vargas spoke about effective techniques to use in selecting a jury in a DUI trial.
Jonathan Rands, of the FBD Bellingham office, has extensive knowledge of Canadian law and addressed how a DUI or other conviction can present serious obstacles to a United States citizen who seeks to enter Canada. This knowledge is critical when representing individuals who wish to travel to Canada either for pleasure, (the Olympics are coming) or because of business or other interests in Canada.
Diego Vargas’ presentation on jury selection drew on his experience of having litigated more than 200 jury trials to verdict. In 2008, Diego had a string of seven “not guilty” jury verdicts in very difficult DUI cases that he attributes, in part, to his techniques used in jury selection.
In addition to speaking at the seminar, both Diego and Jonathan prepared extensive materials which undoubtedly will be used as reference materials for attorneys who defend DUI cases.
